Spring Reset I: Starting Fresh – Mindset & Motivation

New seasons are powerful. Especially Spring, I find.

Seasons remind us that change is not only possible, it’s natural.

And Spring specifically doesn’t rush. It starts slowly. Gently. But before you know it, buds open, light returns, and everything begins to feel alive again.

What if your English learning could feel the same?

Time for a Reset

Over the last two weeks, we looked at how saying no (Warren Buffett style) and simplifying your learning (à la Marie Kondo) can help remove distractions and make room for what matters.

Now it’s time to think about what comes next: How do you begin again?
With fresh energy. With purpose. With a new season.

The idea came to me as I was driving past a field filled with sheep and newborn lambs. That special spring green was everywhere : bright, soft, and full of promise.  It reminded me that after a long winter, nature doesn’t rush into productivity. It wakes up slowly. But it does wake up.

What if we followed that same rhythm in our learning?

That’s how this Spring Detox & Reset series (stay tuned for parts II and III!) was born. It’s a 3-week journey to help you:

  • Refresh your mindset and motivation;
  • Add energy and momentum to your learning habits; and finally
  • Bring lightness and playfulness back to the process.

This isn’t about working harder or hustling.
It’s about starting again, with intention.

Why Spring Might Be a Better “New Year”

In January, many people, especially in North America, feel pressure to set goals, make resolutions, and change everything overnight. But how often does that actually work?

It’s dark. Cold. We’re tired.

Some (smart?! 😉 ) animals are even in mid-hibernation during this time of year!

Maybe January isn’t the right time for most people to grow.

Maybe we’re trying to bloom before we’ve had enough rest.

Looking half-way across the globe on the other hand, in traditional Chinese medicine spring is the season of renewal and growth.  It is atime to detox, wake up gently, and reconnect with your goals. It’s when the earth and people naturally start to move again. That makes spring a perfect time to refresh your approach to learning.

A Spring Tradition from the Czech Republic

Spring celebrations are common around the world: Nowruz, Holi and Songkran are just a few that come to mind.  In the Czech Republic there is also a special fun spring ritual, as Easter comes to a close. It is called the pomlázka, and is celebrated on Easter Monday.

It’s not a religious event; in fact it’s a tradition that began long before Christianity, rooted in ancient fertility and vitality rituals.

Men and boys create a braided whip from willow branches, decorated with bright ribbons. On Easter Monday, they gently tap women and girls with the whip, believing it brings health, youth, and energy for the year ahead. In return, the women give eggs, sweets, or a sometimes something to drink (think slivovice, or damson plum distillate).

Yes, it sounds unusual at first. But at its heart, this tradition was playful, symbolic, and hopeful, just like spring itself.

And, it is this same sense of recharging energy and vitality is what we want to bring to your English learning this week.

So… What’s Your First Step in Renewing Your Commitment to English Learning?

Brush off the cobwebs in your brain.
Not with pressure, not with guilt, but with curiosity.

Ask yourself:

  • What used to motivate me to learn English?
  • What’s changed?
  • What would help me feel more excited about it now?

You don’t need to dive into hours of grammar study or a new app.

Just start by remembering why you want to learn in the first place.
Maybe it’s to connect. To grow. To feel confident. To open new doors.

This week, take a few quiet moments to reflect and reconnect with that purpose.

Then give yourself permission to start again.

Take one small action. A walk while listening to a short English podcast. Repeating a few favourite phrases aloud. Reading one article that truly interests you.

Spring Energy for Your Mind

Think of this week like the sun warming the soil.
Not everything is growing yet, but something important is happening underneath.

You’re waking up your motivation. You’re remembering your “why.”

And you’re allowing yourself to start again – with kindness and clarity.
